“Sí se puede” (“yes, we can”) is more than the powerful slogan of the United Farm Workers from the 1970s, used ever since by it and so many other activist groups. For communities like ours, it’s our lived experience, our perpetual hope, prevailing resilience, and collective strength. It’s what we demonstrate, every day, coming together to support each other and overcome the extra burdens of our neighborhoods. It’s the spirit of our “mutual aid” – us helping us, especially during times of shared crisis or need. Like now, as jobs, benefits, services and more are cut by the USA federal government.
Not charity, mutual aid is solidarity. Not hierarchical (top-down), it’s circular. Not entrapping, it’s liberating. Not weakening, it’s empowering. Maybe as much or more than during the COVID pandemic, mutual aid is vital for our individual and collective survival of the extra challenges, now increasing with each passing day. With the cuts already here and coming, time to lean in, learn more and actively join the network of individuals and organizations growing our community’s mutual aid resources.
